Christopher Kay’s Weekly Picks
Sunday
Super Bowl
After starting training camp way back in the summer, it now all comes down to just one day in February. The 5th day of February. The 5th day of February in the year 2006. On a Sunday. This is what every player strives for during the season, and only one team will be able to hoist the Super Bowl trophy over their heads when it’s all said and done. Savage Ballet indeed.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Seattle Seahawks
It’s all about respect. In year’s past you heard Tom Brady and the Patriots whine about not being respected heading into the Super Bowl and you just had to shake your head and laugh at them for using such a ridiculous ploy (they were favored…it was embarrassing to listen to them). Teams often use this angle as a way of motivating themselves. The Steelers started to use it early on after beating the Broncos and advancing to the Super Bowl and then the next day the spread came out and they saw that they were favored to win against the Seahawks. They smartly and quickly shut up about not being respected, since they were after all the # 6 seed and going up against the # 1 seed in the Seahawks. This is going to help the Seahawks, as they will no doubt use the ‘no respect’ card as much as they want since in this case, and quite possibly the biggest Super Bowl case ever, they deserve to. This whole season no one has bothered to take a look at Seattle, all tucked away in the Pacific Northwest. A year removed from being forecasted as the chic Super Bowl XXXIX pick by many, the Seahawks will play with quite a big chip on their shoulder for Super Bowl XL and this will only help them.
If you’ve noticed in these playoffs, the Seahawks are flying to the ball on defense and hitting people very hard. They won’t be able to stop Big Ben completely, but they may be able to slow him down. On offense, they have the fire power and most importantly the Offensive Line to run on the Steelers, taking them out of their Outside Linebacker blitzing schemes which in turn will open up the pass. Joey Porter is undisciplined both on and off the field and once his role changes from that of a pass rusher to run defender, the Seahawks will have won the game. This contest will be won by the left side of the Seahawks’ line, namely Walter Jones and Steve Hutchison. The best left line in the business. They won’t be getting the Super Bowl MVP trophy, but the team will know who really deserves it.
